Dear Swinburne student,
The Office of Student Engagement invites you to participate in the Swinburne Student Self-Assessment Survey (SSSAS) for 2020.

·         Professor Glen Bates, Faculty of Health and Design – Chief Investigator

·         Dr. Sean Tinker, Office of Student Engagement - Co-Investigator

·         Dr. Richard Whitehead, Office of Student Engagement - Co-Investigator

·         Dr. Brad Elphinstone, Faculty of Health, Arts and Design - Research Associate

·         Rebecca Peachey, Office of Student Engagement – Research Associate

The SSSAS will collect information about students' approaches and attitudes to learning and attributes associated with their well-being that will help us to better understand the types of student programs that could improve learning outcomes for students. We only have a limited amount of knowledge about how Australian university students approach their learning and the information collected in this survey will contribute to the way courses are delivered and the support services that are provided to help students succeed in their studies.

The survey is presented as four modules, each taking around 10-20 minutes to complete and each can be completed separately and in any order. In return for the information you provide you will have the opportunity to receive personalised information reflecting your survey scores.  A report will be provided for each module you complete.

The first module captures your standing and provides feedback on several measures of academic motivation including motivation style, academic functioning, and self-directed learning. The second module captures important learning resources, such as planning,  adaptability, mindfulness, and possible barriers to study such as the tendency to procrastinate. The third module captures information about your well-being including how you view the quality of your life, your levels of worry, anxiety, your social connectedness, empathy, and self-compassion. The fourth module capture elements relevant to your employability at the end of your studies. The feedback provided for each of these modules also includes detailed self-help strategies that can further assist you in developing in a range of areas. The information provided as feedback and self-help strategies can help you reflect on and develop areas associated with your learning, well-being and employability, and provides you with links to supports that may assist you. Information about these important self-assessment areas can enable you to make decisions about improving your learning outcomes, well-being, and making yourself more employable.

To provide you with feedback, you will be asked to provide your student email address. Providing your email address is voluntary. However, it will not be possible to provide you with feedback without this information. Student email address information is strictly confidential and will not be used for any purpose other than the distribution of personalised learning information and to notify prize winners. In the survey you will also be asked to provide your student number. This information will enable researchers to verify your student status as an enrolled Swinburne student and to match future survey information for longitudinal research.  Student numbers gathered in this survey may also be used as part of group correlational data that will allow results of the survey to be cross-referenced with academic records, such as completion rates and grade point average (GPA).  This information will only be used as part of a large group data and your student number will not be used to identify you for any other purpose. Providing your student number is voluntary and you can complete the survey and receive a learning profile without providing it. However, an email address will be required to be sent feedback.

By clicking on the 'next' button and completing the online questionnaire you are deemed to be giving your informed consent to participate. If you do not wish to participate, please do not continue or complete the online questionnaire. If you agree to participate and complete the online questionnaire, please ensure that you have answered all the questions. We confirm that only group data will be used in analysis for publication, and that your responses will not be linked or identified to you as an individual, except to confidentially provide you with your personalised feedback.

Participation in this survey is voluntary and if you do not wish to participate you are not obligated in any form to complete the questionnaire. Should you wish to withdraw your consent after completing the survey, please contact the principle researcher (details below) and every effort will be made to remove your data if sufficient information exists to identify you as the author of the data. Withdrawal of data will not affect your course standing or your enrolment in any way whatsoever. Remember, if at any time you feel like you would benefit from speaking with someone, please contact one of the support services listed below.

All data will be collected and stored in accordance with Swinburne University research guidelines.
